Situated at the Haurangi State Forest Park, the Aorangi Crossing has been closed for two years.  We tagged along for a work-and-play weekend organised by the 4WD clubs and joined the working party for a day to maintain sections of the Sutherland Track.

Here're five reasons why track maintenance is more fun than gardening:

  • You don't have to truck the unwanted branches to the tip
  • You don't get told off for leaving dirt on the carpet
  • You don't have to see your hard work being undone and then have to do it all again next week
  • You get the excitement of seeing people stuck in bog and ruts
  • You are allowed to make a mess when making tracks
